General Information

Sony AI is seeking highly motivated, self-driven research interns with expertise in reinforcement learning (RL) and computer vision (CV) to join our Tokyo-based team for a 6-month internship on Game AI project. Our research interns have an opportunity to conduct innovative research on ambitious RL and/or CV problems for real-time complex computer games. You will also have the chance to publish your innovative research results at relevant top-tier conferences.

Our aim is to advance AI so that it augments – and works in harmony with – humans to benefit society. In this Game AI project, we are working on AI technologies to enhance both the game experience for users and the creativity of game creators.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Execute research programs applying deep RL to real-time complex computer games. As an initial step, the research may be conducted using a commonly used simulated environment, if it is valid.
  • Investigate new algorithms and approaches to solving AI problems in games and game creation.
  • Construct computer vision datasets from scratch, if needed.
  • Write code to support research, usually in python.
  • Write reports and give presentations for internal audiences.
  • Work closely with a team of AI researchers and programmers on ambitious demonstration projects.
  • Publish influential research outcomes at top-tier conferences.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Progress towards Ph.D. in reinforcement learning or equivalent experience.
  • Background in computer vision would be a plus.
  • Experience designing and debugging neural networks.
  • Publications, expertise, and/or work experience in machine learning.
  • Passion for making AI work in realistic challenging domains.
  • Proven ability to implement software in Python.
  • (Preferred) Experience with cloud computing, in particular AWS.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills including the ability to articulate to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent oral and written English. Japanese language skills are a plus but not a necessity.
