Profile

Okan joined Sony AI in December 2020, and is working from the Tokyo office. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, he received his BSc. degree in electrical engineering and in mathematics from Bogazici University in 2009. Afterwards he pursued a MSc. degree in applied mathematics in ETH Zurich from 2010 to 2013. In 2014, he started his Ph.D. in robotics under the supervision of Prof. Jan Peters, working in the Max Planck Institute of Intelligent Systems in Tuebingen. He received his Ph.D. degree in 2018, and afterwards worked in Amazon as an applied research scientist.

“Currently I'm working on the Imaging and Sensing project at Sony AI. Our goal is to make robots achieve incredible feats, by making use of advanced sensing technologies and new sensing modalities. My dream is to build flexible robots that can learn from mistakes and failure, and I'm interested in machine learning and control methodologies that will enable that.”
