February 7, 2025

Tokyo, Japan – February 6, 2025Alice Xiang, Global Head of AI Ethics at Sony and Lead Research Scientist for the AI Ethics Flagship at Sony AI, has been honored with the Future of Privacy Forum’s Privacy Papers for Policymakers Award.

Her essay, Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall, Who's the Fairest of Them All?, discusses the challenges to developing fair AI and how they stem from a reflective property. The paper considers how AI reflects societal patterns – just and unjust – and the worldviews of its human creators – whether they are fair or biased. It also delves into the ongoing debates in AI ethics that often hinge on comparisons between AI and humans.

The Privacy Papers for Policymakers (PPPM) Award recognizes leading privacy scholarship that is relevant to policymakers in the U.S. Congress and federal agencies, as well as data protection authorities abroad. The paper was considered by a diverse team of academics, advocates, and industry privacy professionals from the Future of Privacy Forum’s Advisory Board and Finalist Judges.

The thought-provoking essay was originally published in Dædalus, the open-access Journal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, winter 2024 issue, “Understanding Implicit Bias: Insights & Innovations.”
