Sony AI Ethics Flagship: Reflecting on Our Progress and Purpose
AI Ethics
January 14, 2025
Since Sony AI’s inception, ethics has been at the heart of everything we do. The establishment of our AI Ethics Research Flagship at the beginning of our journey laid the foundation for tackling some of AI’s most complex challenges.
Under the leadership of Alice Xiang, the Global Head of AI Ethics at Sony and Lead Research Scientist for the AI Ethics Flagship at Sony AI, our Ethics team is deeply connected to Sony Group's global initiatives. Alice oversees AI ethics governance across all Sony business units, playing a pivotal role in aligning the company’s AI development with its comprehensive AI Ethics Guidelines. Her work includes establishing governance frameworks, developing policies, and leading cutting-edge research in areas such as ethical data collection, fairness benchmarks, and bias mitigation.
This alignment between Sony AI and Sony Group Corporation underscores the company’s commitment to pioneering the ethical application of AI, ensuring that its technologies contribute to a fair and equitable society while fostering trust and accountability across industries.
Today, we reflect on the milestones we’ve reached along the way—advancing research, addressing societal impacts, and shaping the conversation around ethical AI. These accomplishments underscore our unwavering commitment to ensuring that AI aligns with human values and benefits everyone equitably.
Reducing Bias and Enhancing Representation
Bias in datasets is one of the most significant barriers to fair AI. Since 2020, we have taken meaningful steps to confront it head-on.
In our research on mitigating bias, “Mitigating Bias in AI Models: A New Approach with TAB,” we introduced TAB (Targeted Augmentations for Bias Mitigation).) TAB emphasizes examples in datasets that challenge common patterns or stereotypes, improving model performance on underrepresented groups without compromising overall accuracy.
Representation also means moving beyond simplistic measures of diversity. In “Beyond Skin Tone: A Multidimensional Measure of Apparent Skin Color,” we emphasized the importance of making bias evaluations more inclusive, and noted, “Skin tone is multidimensional, and our method provides a nuanced framework that better captures diversity, making fairness evaluations more robust and effective.”
We also tackled structural issues in data collection with “Ushering in Needed Change in the Pursuit of More Diverse Datasets.” This work advocates for clearer definitions and stronger validation methods in the creation of diverse datasets, using measurement theory as a foundational framework to guide this process.
Drawing Inspiration from Diverse Perspectives
Inclusivity and combating bias have been central to Sony AI’s mission since its inception. To reinforce this commitment, we took on thought-provoking commentary on the importance of diverse voices.
In her Fortune Op-Ed piece, our Global Head of AI Ethics and Lead Research Scientists for AI Ethics, Alice Xiang, explored parallels between the cosmetic industry’s transformation through Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty and the advancements needed in AI development. As she pointed out, much like how Fenty’s inclusive shade ranges revolutionized the beauty world, our research strives to redefine inclusivity in AI by going beyond simplistic measures of bias, introducing multidimensional frameworks to address underrepresentation across diverse groups.
The journey of recognizing and addressing bias is echoed in broader societal contexts. Insights from the Dædalus Journal’s "Understanding Implicit Bias" emphasize the systemic nature of bias and the need for solutions that are both structural and cognitive. Xiang’s contribution, “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who’s the Fairest of them All?” explores the idea of AI as a reflection of society’s patterns—both just and unjust. Rather than debating whether humans or AI are “fairer,” the piece challenges us to learn from these reflections and address how we can create AI systems that better serve fairness and equity. A must-read for anyone examining the intersection of ethics and AI development.
At Sony AI, we’ve taken these lessons to heart by embedding ethics into the fabric of our research processes and prioritizing diverse perspectives in all aspects of AI development.
Balancing Privacy and Fairness
The interplay between privacy and fairness presents a complex ethical dilemma: protecting individual privacy is critical, but it can sometimes lead to unintended biases in AI models. We explored this tension in an effort to promote effective solutions.
In “When Privacy and Fairness Collide,” we noted, “Privacy-preserving techniques, while essential, can inadvertently reduce representation for marginalized groups in training datasets. Balancing these priorities requires innovative approaches that account for real-world complexities.”
That article discussed some of the trade-offs highlighted in “Being ‘Seen’ vs. ‘Mis-Seen,’” where we pointed out, “Fairness often comes at the cost of privacy in computer vision systems. Our research seeks to reconcile these conflicting values, creating systems that are both fair and respectful of individual privacy.” This work has pushed us to think more deeply about how we can develop AI systems that respect both privacy and equity, without compromising either.
Advancing Transparency in AI Evaluations
Transparency is a cornerstone of ethical AI. Without it, we can’t build the trust or accountability that users and communities deserve.
In “Exposing Limitations in Fairness Evaluations: Human Pose Estimation,” we pointed out, “Current fairness metrics often fail to capture the complexities of real-world data. Our work aims to expand these frameworks, ensuring that evaluations are as diverse and dynamic as the people they aim to serve.”
Another breakthrough, “New Dataset Labeling Breakthrough Strips Social Constructs in Image Recognition, ” introduced a way to study human diversity without using labels like race, age, or gender. Instead, it focused on how people naturally perceive similarities between faces, providing insights into what makes faces look alike and helping create AI models that are easier to understand.
We strive to uphold transparency in all our work. To do so, we need to recognize that transparency isn’t just about metrics—it’s about trust.
Celebrating Voices Driving Change
One of our highlights was celebrating the individuals driving change in AI ethics. At Sony AI, our commitment to AI ethics is not just reflected in the technologies we develop but also in the diverse voices that drive this mission forward. This year, we spotlighted several remarkable individuals whose work is shaping the future of ethical AI.
Highlighting Key Team Members
In our "Meet the Team" series, we showcased Victoria Matthews, Julienne LaChance, and Dora Zhao, who are pivotal members of our AI Ethics team at the time of publication. Their expertise spans AI policy, computer vision, and fairness in data systems. Victoria emphasized the role of policy in turning ethical principles into actionable frameworks, while Julienne discussed the global perspective needed in AI ethics research, particularly in underrepresented regions. Dora shared how her academic journey in sociology and computer science fueled her passion for addressing social biases in AI systems.
Empowering Women in AI
During Women’s History Month, we celebrated the achievements of the incredible women at Sony AI. Leaders like Alice Xiang and her colleagues shared stories of progress and inspiration in a field that still faces gender disparities. These women highlighted the growing representation of females in AI and emphasized the importance of mentorship and diversity in driving innovation. For example, Mireille El Gheche reflected on how inclusive initiatives have opened doors for greater female participation in AI, while Lingjuan Lyu highlighted the critical role of family support in her journey to becoming a leader in privacy-preserving machine learning.
